How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Johannesburg

By Jared Hooper, Hooper Digital Solutions 8 min read

Johannesburg has a very large number of agencies, and from the outside they can look almost identical: the same service lists, the same claims about results, the same stock language about being data-driven. Choosing between them is hard precisely because the marketing of marketers is so uniform.

This guide is a checklist for cutting through that. It is written by an agency, so weigh it accordingly, and at the end we say plainly where we are and are not the right choice.

Start with what you actually need

Before you speak to any agency, write down in one sentence what has to change in the next year: more enquiries, more of the enquiries you get turning into customers, a better-looking brand, or less of your own time spent on marketing. Those point to different kinds of agency.

A common mistake is buying more traffic when the real problem is that enquiries you already get are being lost. Doubling visitors to a website that converts badly, or leads to a phone that goes unanswered, just doubles the waste.

Ask to see proof, not claims

  • Real work you can look at and click through, not screenshots of a dashboard.
  • Clients you can speak to, ideally in a business similar to yours.
  • A clear account of what they did and what changed, including what did not work.
  • The specific person who will do the work, not only the person who sells it.

Be careful of guaranteed rankings

Nobody controls Google. An agency that guarantees a number-one ranking is either targeting a search nobody makes, or is not being straight with you. Legitimate agencies talk about what they can control: the work they will do, the standards they will meet and how progress will be measured.

The same applies to any promise of a specific number of leads before they have looked at your market, offer and price. A number given that early is invented.

Understand how you will be charged and how you can leave

  • Is it a fixed monthly retainer, a project fee, or based on results, and what exactly counts as a result?
  • What is the notice period, and is there a lock-in?
  • Who owns the website, the ad accounts, the social accounts and the data? You should.
  • What is included, and what is billed as extra?

Check what happens after the enquiry arrives

Marketing ends when someone contacts you, but revenue does not begin until they are answered and followed up. A good agency will ask about your response process, and a great one will help you fix it.

This is the gap most agencies leave alone, and it is where a lot of marketing spend disappears: calls unanswered, forms replied to a day later, quotes never followed up.

Where a specialist AI agency fits, and where it does not

We are Hooper Digital Solutions, based in Randburg. We are strongest where the problem is what happens after someone contacts a business: AI receptionists, missed-call recovery, speed-to-lead, WhatsApp automation and lead generation, alongside websites, social content and video.

We are probably not the right choice if you mainly want a large traditional media buy, a big brand campaign across television and print, or a full-service agency with a large in-house team. Those are different businesses and there are good ones in Johannesburg.

Common questions

How much should I expect to pay a digital marketing agency?

It varies enormously with scope, so be wary of anyone who quotes without understanding what you need. Compare on what is included and how results are measured rather than on the headline fee.

Should I choose a Johannesburg agency specifically?

Location matters less than fit. A local agency is convenient for meetings and knows the market, but many agencies work remotely. Choose on proof and fit, and treat proximity as a bonus.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer can be excellent for a narrow, well-defined job. An agency makes more sense when you need several skills together and continuity if one person leaves.
